ARDECHE - Lakes, Mounts and Highlands

On this trail you will discover the Vernoux en Vivarais plateau, the ranked village of Chalençon aux balcons de l'Eyrieux, the Devesset lake to finally arrive to the Eyrieux valley, via Lamastre...


Day 1
Meeting point in the equestrian inn, a former castle farm, between 8:30am and 9am (possibility to arrive the day before if you want). You will be explained your itinerary for the day and will get your horse to start the ride. We ride to the village of Silhac. After climbing Serre de la Roue, centre of religious wars, we ride across a beautiful chesnut grove to go toward Justice Pass. We will have our picnic break close to Faugs Castle and Chabre Farm, birth house and living place Castle of the composer Vincent Indy. After our stop, we go to Vernoux en Vivarais and its highest bell tower of Ardeche. We cross the Duniere through an old stone bridge to start climbing to reach Pray d'Aunay inn where we have the dinner and the night.

Day 2
We start our day with the village of Chalençon, medieval heritage site where we have a panoramic view on Eyrieux valley. After leaving the village, we start to climb the Ardeche Mounts Natural Park mounts. A nice canter leads us to the village of Saint Jean Chambre where we let our horses drink before riding over Croix du Loup pass and have our picnic break. Our afternoon itinerary to Lamastre starts with the crossing of chesnut grove woods. Before reaching Reynaud Mount pass, a plateau lets us the opportunity to speed up the gaits and canter. We start our descent towards Saramant where we can admire Gibier Mount and ardechois mountain before going back to the inn for the dinner and the night.

Day 3
We start our day with the crossing of Lamastre, arrival train station of the Vivarais touristic train. We ride between firs and orchards until Sauvages Castle where we start climbing towards Ardechois plateaus. The path is perfect for a couple of canters and have a view until Cadet, where we stop to let our horses drink and then follow our way to Saint Agrève (known for its mid-August "Equiblues" western festival). We explore the Eyrieux valley before to go up to Ardeche Mounts Natural Parks plateaus. Along the watershed we have a nice view on the Mezenc and the Gerbier des Joncs Mounts, we arrive in the late afternoon on the Devesset lake banks where we stop for the night at the Oustau Inn.

Day 4
After a generous breakfast, we ride along Devesset lake and over Brun Pass to start our descent until the Batie d'Andorre where we stop to have our lunch break on the Doux riverside. Then, it's time for a nap and an swim if the weather is good enough before going to the feudal village of Desaignes, and finally Lamastre to reach our inn "Buisson d'Urbilhac".

Day 5
Today we are going to follow a loop way. We start with the crossing of Saint Barthelemy village at the bottom of Serre de la Roue. A panoramic view is waiting for us at the top of Serre des Fourches, then we have the possibility to canter to the picnic spot, close to Bosc castle. After lunch, we ride over Saint Genest pass to reach "La Ferme du Châtaignier" where we visit the farm and taste the chesnut in every shape and form. After crossing Lamastre along Vivarais touristic train railway, we go back to the stables and inn. Individual departure from 6:30pm.

Our horses and required riding ability

Horse breeds

Horses have been chosen by Hubert for their kindness and their ability for trail. They are from many different breeds, all at easy with trails. We pick a horse for you according to your riding ability and your morphology.


English style with quality trail saddles for the comfort of horses and riders. Saddlebags are available to carry your personal equipment during the day.

Recommended riding ability

To join this trail, you have to be comfortable at the three gaits even fast, with an experience of riding in open spaces.
An intermediate riding level is enough.
It can be your first time outdoor riding over several days, but for safety reasons, novice riders are not accepted on this trail.

Good to know
Gaits are adjusted according to the conditions: moderate speed in general, with canters when ground is good.
Children can come alone from 14 years old if they have a good riding level with a parental permission (mandatory).

Helmet can be provided but we highly recommend to bring your own.

The local team

The riding tour is supervised by Hubert, an equestrian tourism accompanist born in the region.

An assistance vehicle carries luggage to the next accomodation.


We sleep in different Inns, 3 to 4 people rooms or in 4 to 8 people dormitory. It's possible to take a shower every evening. Please bring your sleeping bag and your bathroom towels.
Individual room are not possible.
One of the inns has an outdoor swimming pool you can use in summer, perfect after a long riding day.


We carry our picnic lunches in our saddlebags. For dinner, hot meals are cooked by our hosts. Chesnut meals take the place of honour: bread, cake, sautéed... and of course chesnut kir!
Water and wine will be served at dinner.

Languages spoken by the guide: French and English.

Group size: From 2 to 9 riders

Arrival airport / train station:

Meeting at the riding centre at around 8:30 am/9 am
Departure around 6 pm/6:30 pm

Transfers are possible from and to Valence Ville train station (shuttle from Valence TGV train station).
- If you arrive the day before and stay one extra night : welcoming and transfer from Valence Ville train station is possible between 7pm and 8pm.
- The first day of the ride, welcoming and transfer is possible until 8:30 am.
- At the end of the trail, transfer is possible after the last riding day (plan a departure from the train station after 7pm) or the day after, after breakfast.

You need to book your transfers when you book your ride. Please let us know how and when you arrive/leave.

Possibility to book an extra night the day before or after the trail from 40€/person.
