PROVENCE - From Luberon to Camargue on horseback

A real horse trip that will take you from the Provencal mountains of the "Luberon", across Van Gogh’s hills "Les Alpilles", and to the Mediterranean sea, into the famous Camargue region, land of flamingos, black bulls and white horses.
From limestone hills to swamps, enjoy riding among Camargue horses, bulls and pink flamingos. We end the riding tour by galloping on the beaches...

Horse riding tour in Provence, from Lubron to Alpilles and Camargue - Ride in France

Day 1 - Sunday

The riders are welcomed from 7pm with a welcoming aperitif. You will be introduced to your guide, to the other participants and spend a first friendly dinner at the «host’s table». Overnight in the guesthouse.

Day 2 - Monday
: Lauris - Mallemort
By the south hillside of Luberon, the pine trees, the cliffs landscapes, we ride down to the Durance and through it to have a delicious lunch alongside the River. After a long nap, we start the afternoon riding alongside the canal irrigating many of the cultivations in the valley and arrive in late afternoon at our horses’ stables. The riders are transferred to their guest house in Lauris.

Day 3 - Tuesday: Mallemort - Eygalières
This morning, we ride through the fragrant scrubland toward the Alpilles, a wonderful limestone massif where the white color of the cliffs contrasts with the green color of the pine trees. We arrive nearby Eygalières passing by the Saint Sixte Chapel. Night in a guesthouse under the Alpilles.

Day 4 - Wednesday: Eygalières - Les Baux de Provence - Astouin
Through the Alpilles and the pine forest paths among the cicadas, we ride to discover Van Gogh landscapes: nearby the Saint-Paul monastery where he was interned and the Roman arc in Glanum. We have a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, we enjoy nice views on the Alpilles crests before discovering the Baux de Provence shape. Visit of the village and transfer in minibus up to Camargue region. Night in a guesthouse.

Day 5 - Thursday: Astouin - Visite d'une manade - Les Saintes Maries de la Mer
After an hour on horseback in the heart of the Camargue, we arrive at a manade. Mathieu, a passionate herdsman, welcomes us in front of the enclosure of one of his herds of bulls. We accompany him on horseback to ‘accamper’ the bulls, i.e. push them through the marshes to a sorting pen. He then tells us about the ‘course camarguaise’, breeding methods and the traditions associated with Camargue bulls, before sorting some of the bulls in front of us. Picnic on the manade prepared by our assistant. We then ride back to the manade where the horses will be staying this evening. Transfer to our hotel in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. After settling in at the hotel, we have time to stroll through the narrow streets of the village and do some shopping, take a trip to the beach, or enjoy the hotel swimming pool, before dinner in a village restaurant and a late evening in a lively bodega. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 6 - Friday: Les Saintes Maries de la Mer - Méjanes
Today, we spend the morning on the beach and have a picnic under a laupio (a typical Camargue shelter). In the afternoon, we set off for Méjanes along the Etang du Vacarès: superb scenery in the heart of the Camargue along the pond with its many pink flamingos. End of the ride in Méjanes, loading the horses into the lorry and transferring the riders to Lauris for the last meal and the last night.

Day 7 - Saturday
End of the equestrian tour in Provence after breakfast. Free transfer to Aix en Provence TGV station or Marseille airport.

This riding tour is given on an indicative basis. Depending on the seasons and the meteorological conditions during the tour, the guide may modify the tour.

Our riding consultant's report

A relaxing itinerant ride across the typical landscapes of the Camargue region...

Riding guest reviews

"Very successful horse trip with an excellent guide, great horses, friendly riders, beautiful scenery and perfect weather. Great horses of different breeds, kept in a group, balanced and motivated. Riding knowledge and preferences were asked beforehand, so everyone was able to find the horse that suited them. A very good programme. Every day of riding was different, no day was boring. River crossings, magnificent views and beautiful gallops. Very varied landscapes, magnificent views and most of the time accompanied by the scent of different herbs. Riding in the Camargue with the bulls and on the beach was also a great experience. Accommodation: mostly good, often with swimming pools. Food: good and plentiful, always trouble free with an option for vegetarians." - Yvonne (2023)

"For my first equestrian trail experience, it will be an unforgettable moment. Breathtaking landscapes and time and peace to enjoy it, perfect horses, adapted material, really comfortable accomodations with welcoming and generous hosts... Everything was as described and more! I left with my head full of memories and one thought: when is the next time ? More than a sport adventure, I will keep the human adventure in my mind. I met humble people, true, who love their region and their horses and enjoy sharing everything. How can I thank Didier, Isa and Pierrot for all of these simple moments? Also a nice meeting with Alice and Nicky!" - Marion N. (2018)
