LUBERON – Horseback Riding & Nature Retreat

Discovery stay in the heart of the Luberon Regional Natural Park, where we explore on horseback the breathtaking landscapes of the Luberon, a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve. At the end of the stay, two days of itinerant horseback riding provide us with a tantalizing preview of equestrian travel, allowing us to fully savor this unique experience.

Cezanne's Provence trail ride / Ride in France - Randocheval

Day 1 - Sunday
We meet in Provence, in the village of Lauris at the foot of the Luberon, between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. A free transfer can be arranged upon request from either Aix-en-Provence TGV station or Marseille Provence Airport. Once we arrive, we settle into our guesthouse rooms. At 7:30pm, we gather for a welcome aperitif, followed by a presentation of the week’s programme. Dinner is then served, and we spend the night in a peaceful and convivial atmosphere.

Day 2 - Monday
We set off for our first day of gentle horseback rides through the Luberon hills. This introductory session allows us to get comfortable with our horses while enjoying the surrounding landscapes. We ride for about two hours in the morning, then return to the guesthouse for a relaxed picnic lunch. In the afternoon, we head out again for another two-hour ride. The day ends with a hearty dinner and another restful night at the guesthouse.

Day 3 - Tuesday
Today, we embark on a full day of horseback riding through the stunning scenery of the Luberon. Depending on the route and weather, we pause for a picnic either along the Durance River or on the ridges of the Luberon, amidst a beautiful cedar forest. After a day rich in discovery and outdoor adventure, we return to the guesthouse for dinner and a good night’s rest.

Day 4 - Wednesday
The morning is free for us to explore the charming village of Lourmarin, officially ranked among the most beautiful villages in the Luberon. This is also where the writer Albert Camus lived and is buried. Lunch is at our leisure, giving us time to enjoy one of the many local cafés or restaurants. In the afternoon, we set off for a half-day ride through pine forests, along vineyards, olive groves, and fruit orchards typical of the region. Back at the guesthouse, dinner is served, and we spend another quiet evening in the heart of Provence.

Day 5 - Thursday
We begin a two-day horseback ride across the Luberon, with an overnight stay in a traditional inn nestled in the mountains. In the morning, we ride along the base of the Petit Luberon, reaching Lourmarin once again. Our picnic lunch is enjoyed in the shade of truffle oaks, before we ascend to the ridgelines of the Grand Luberon. From there, we are rewarded with breathtaking views stretching from the Alps in the north to the Mediterranean Sea in the south. By late afternoon, we arrive at the Auberge des Seguins, set in an exceptional natural setting, where we have dinner and spend the night. If the inn is unavailable, our horses remain there while we are transferred back to Lauris for the night.

Day 6 - Friday
We complete our ride by following the Gorges de l’Aiguebrun, renowned for its impressive limestone cliffs popular among climbers. We then climb up to the Plateau des Claparèdes, famous for its vast lavender fields, and stop for a picnic near the hilltop village of Bonnieux. In the afternoon, we return to Lauris, riding through shaded ravines and quiet trails of the Petit Luberon. The evening concludes with a shared dinner and our final night at the guesthouse.

Day 7 - Saturday
Our riding adventure comes to an end after breakfast. At 9:30am, a complimentary transfer departs for Aix-en-Provence TGV station or Marseille Provence Airport.

This itinerary is given as an indicative basis. Depending on the seasons and the meteorological conditions during the tour, the guide may modify the tour.

Our horses and required riding ability

Horse breeds
Our travel companions are Spanish or barb crossbreds, adapted to trail riding. Well balanced and willing, they live in a herd, outdoors, and are only used for trail riding. They are our guarantee for a relaxing and safe ride.
Tack
Our saddles are designed for trail riding and allow a laid back style of riding.

Recommended riding ability

This riding holiday is designed to adapt to the level of each participant. To ensure everyone's safety and enjoyment, riders must be confident and autonomous on horseback: comfortable at walk and trot, and already familiar with cantering outdoors without apprehension.

It is particularly well suited to riders who may not yet feel ready to embark on a fully itinerant riding tour, which typically requires solid experience in trail riding. This program offers an excellent opportunity to build confidence and skills, serving as a perfect stepping stone toward future horseback travel adventures.

The itinerary is flexible and can be adjusted according to the group’s riding level, weather conditions, and fire risk. Non-riding companions are also welcome, with various options available for their stay.

Program highlights:

  • The first part of the week includes two full days on horseback (4 to 5 hours of riding per day), followed by a half-day rest on the third day, with a morning visit to the picturesque village of Lourmarin, and a 2–3 hour ride in the afternoon.

  • The final two days are dedicated to a two-day itinerant horseback trek, averaging 5 hours of riding per day, with an overnight stay in a traditional inn in the heart of the Luberon (subject to availability).

The local team

Guides are certified, and are friends who made a job of their passion. They will share with you this passion and the pleasure of trail riding. They speak French and English and try not to be the leader in the riding tour.
A logistics vehicle carries the luggage from one accomodation to another.

Accomodation

We stay in a comfortable guesthouse in double rooms, located next to the riding center, featuring an indoor pool, jacuzzi, and sauna.

During the two-day horseback trek, we spend one night in a traditional inn at the foot of the Luberon, with a swimming pool. Accommodation there is either in shared rooms or dormitories. A triple room includes one double bed and one single bed.

Note: The overnight stay in the inn during the two-day itinerant ride is subject to availability. If the inn is fully booked, riders will be transferred back by minibus to the base guesthouse, while the horses remain overnight at the inn.

Meals

Breakfasts served throughout the stay are of a traditional type. They include hot beverages accompanied by bread, butter, jam, honey, cereals, and fruit juices. No savory items such as cheese or eggs are provided.

On Monday, lunch is served at the guesthouse in a pleasant setting near the pool. During the riding days, midday meals consist of packed picnics carried in saddlebags, featuring assorted salads, local cold cuts, cheeses, fruits, and other fresh products. On Wednesday, lunch is free (not included) in Lourmarin, allowing everyone to enjoy the village’s restaurants at their leisure.

Dinners are served at the guesthouse’s table d’hôtes, in a warm and convivial atmosphere, offering refined and varied local cuisine. During the two days of itinerant trekking, a dinner at the inn is also included, subject to availability. Special dietary requirements, such as vegetarian or medical diets, can be accommodated upon request. Wine is included with the evening meals.

Our riding consultant's report

Six days through an ever changing landscape with a typical fauna and flora... you will never forget you are in Provence.

Riding guest reviews

"We loved this horse ride in the Luberon. It is probably one of the most beautiful and picturesque landscapes in Europe. The horses were well looked after and the tack fitted and comfortable. It's a beautiful place and the guide was excellent. There are so many great photos here on horseback that it's hard to choose. We were a very experienced group of riders and although it's not a particularly fast ride, but not necessary as there was so much to see. The horses were very good. The food is also excellent on this trip, as is the accommodation. There is a choice of hostel or hostel-style B&B accommodation. The support is brilliant and offers everything you need for you and your horse. I would do this trip again because it was amazing." - Christine
