LUBERON - The Luberon Horse Riding Tour

A tour of the Luberon on horseback, in the heart of the Regional Natural Park: a remarkable site in Provence, a UNESCO-listed natural park. A ride of colours, a ride of scents. You'll ride through oak forests, pine forests, garrigue scented with Provençal herbs, valleys at the foot of superb cliffs that are home to many birds of prey, and you'll pass through perched Luberon villages typical of Provence.

Cezanne's Provence trail ride / Ride in France - Randocheval

Day 1 - Sunday
Meet in Provence at Lauris, at the foot of the Luberon, from 7pm. Free transfer from Aix en Provence TGV station or Marseille Provence airport. Settle into your guest room, welcome drink and presentation of your tour, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2 - Monday: Lauris – Buoux
This morning, we take an initial two-hour loop on horseback to familiarise ourselves with our mounts. After lunch at the equestrian farm, we set off again on horseback through the Petit Luberon towards Bonnieux, a superb hilltop village in Provence. We then ride past lavender fields before descending to the foot of the superb climbing cliffs at Buoux. The evening stopover is at an auberge in the heart of the Luberon, at the foot of the cliffs: the Auberge des Seguins. Take a dip in the spring-fed pool to relax and refresh before dinner.

Day 3 - Tuesday: Buoux - Rustrel
We set off again on horseback, following the lush green Aiguebrun valley along a pleasant shady path. We head for the pretty hilltop village of Saignon, typical of the Luberon region, before descending into the Calavon valley, past orchards of cherry, peach and apricot trees... In other words, ‘the garden of Provence’. At lunchtime, a hearty buffet awaits us by the river, where we can enjoy a pleasant break. In the afternoon, we'll follow paths through the pinewoods and garrigues to reach our accommodation for dinner at an inn in the heart of the village of Rustrel.

Day 4 - Wednesday: Rustrel - Céreste
In the morning, we pass over the Colorado Provençal with a superb view of the site. We then head for the beautiful village of Viens, another hilltop village in the Luberon. We will then cross the Calavon river to reach Céreste, gateway to Haute Provence, where we will spend the night in a gîte, bed and breakfast or hotel.

Day 5 - Thursday: Céreste - Buoux
Today's ride begins by following the foot of the Grand Luberon on horseback through Provençal garrigue, walking through thyme, rosemary and wild mint, then skirting orchards. In the afternoon, following a pleasant path along the Aiguebrun stream, we reach the Auberge des Seguins for a swim in the pool.

Day 6 - Friday: Buoux - Lauris
On horseback, we ride down into the Aiguebrun gorges before climbing back up to the ridges, from where we can enjoy superb views of the Alpine peaks to the north and the Mediterranean to the south! Picnic near Lourmarin, a listed village where Albert Camus lived. The return to Lauris follows the foot of the Luberon. The paths are peaceful, through pine forests and along vineyards and orchards overlooking the Durance valley, with a fine view of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire so dear to Cézanne. Dinner and overnight in guest rooms.

Day 7 - Saturday
Your tour ends after breakfast. Free transfer to Aix en Provence TGV station or Marseille airport at 9.30am.

Our riding consultant's report

Six days through an ever changing landscape with a typical fauna and flora... you will never forget you are in Provence.

Riding guest reviews

"We loved this horse ride in the Luberon. It is probably one of the most beautiful and picturesque landscapes in Europe. The horses were well looked after and the tack fitted and comfortable. It's a beautiful place and the guide was excellent. There are so many great photos here on horseback that it's hard to choose. We were a very experienced group of riders and although it's not a particularly fast ride, but not necessary as there was so much to see. The horses were very good. The food is also excellent on this trip, as is the accommodation. There is a choice of hostel or hostel-style B&B accommodation. The support is brilliant and offers everything you need for you and your horse. I would do this trip again because it was amazing." - Christine
